The Mediating Effects of Mothers Expressed Emotion in the Relationships between Mother`s and Child`s Depression

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of mothers¡¯ Expressed Emotion in the relationships between mother¡¯s and child¡¯s depression. The subject were 451 elementary students(212boys, 239girls) from 4th to 5th grade and their mothers in Seoul. Mothers were assessed by Beck Depression Instrument, Family Involvement and Criticism scale and the children were assessed by Children¡¯s Depression Inventory. The results were as follows: First, total score of mothers¡® depression, subfactors of mother¡¯s and child¡¯s depression showed a significant positive correlations. Mothers¡® depression and EOI(emotional overinvolvement) showed a significant negative correlations. But mothers¡® depression and PC (perceived criticism) had a significant positive correlations. EOI and child¡¯s depression showed a significant negative correlations. But PC and child¡¯s depression showed a significant positive correlations. Second, PC had a significant positive efforts on mother¡¯s and child¡¯s depression but EOI showed a significant negative efforts on mother¡¯s and child¡¯s depression. Third, PC and EOI partially mediated in mother¡¯s and child¡¯s depression. This study was confirmed the mediating effects of mothers¡® EE especially PC and EOI in the relationships between mother¡¯s and child¡¯s depression.
